Dr. José Rizal Way — A Historic Tribute in the Heart of Queens

New York City, USA | In a vibrant celebration of culture, history, and community pride, an intersection in Queens has been officially co-named Dr. José P. Rizal Way — honoring the Philippine national hero and recognizing the deep roots of Filipino heritage in New York City.

A Street That Tells a Story

Located at the corner of Woodside Avenue and 58th Street in the diverse and bustling neighborhood of Woodside, the newly co-named street reflects the energy of one of New York’s largest Filipino communities. Woodside has long been a home and gathering place for Filipino immigrants and Filipino Americans, earning it a special place in the city’s multicultural mosaic.

Leaders and Community Unite

The successful street co-naming was driven by Assembly Member Steven Raga, the first Filipino American elected to the New York State Assembly, and championed through city legislation by Council Member Julie Won. Their efforts brought local government officials and community members together to honor Rizal’s legacy.

At the unveiling ceremony, Council Member Won noted that naming the intersection after Rizal is more than symbolic — it “speaks to our ethos as a district of immigrants”, and underscores the vital contributions of Filipino culture to the life of the city.

Celebrating Rizal’s Enduring Legacy

Dr. José P. Rizal (1861–1896) is revered as the Philippines’ national hero, a polymath whose writings helped inspire the movement for Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule. His life and work continue to resonate with Filipino communities around the world.

Philippine Consul General in New York Senen T. Mangalile drew parallels between Rizal’s universal ideals — including freedom, justice, and human dignity — and the Filipino migrant experience in New York. His remarks celebrated the resilience and cultural heritage of Filipino New Yorkers.

A Moment of Pride for the Filipino Diaspora

The event brought together leaders and advocates, including Congresswoman Grace Meng, representatives from Filipino-American organizations, and members of the Knights of Rizal, who were instrumental in promoting the co-naming initiative.

For the Filipino diaspora in Queens and beyond, the unveiling of Dr. José P. Rizal Way stands as a powerful tribute — not just to a historic figure, but to the vibrant community that continues to shape the cultural fabric of New York City.
