Hillary Diane Andales: The Filipina Astrophysicist Inspiring the World Through Science

In a world where curiosity fuels discovery, one remarkable Filipina continues to prove that passion, perseverance, and purpose can reach far beyond the stars.

Hillary Diane Andales has become one of the Philippines’ brightest scientific minds, earning international recognition as an accomplished astrophysicist and one of the country’s leading science communicators. Her journey from Abuyog, Leyte to some of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions demonstrates how Filipino excellence can shine on the global stage.

From Leyte to the World

Born in Abuyog, Leyte, Hillary survived Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan)—an experience that profoundly shaped her mission in life. She realized that science should not remain confined to textbooks but should empower people with knowledge that can save lives and help communities prepare for future challenges.

Today, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she distinguished herself through academic excellence, astrophysics research, and science outreach.

A Historic Global Achievement

Hillary gained worldwide recognition after becoming the 2017 Grand Winner of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, surpassing more than 11,000 participants from 178 countries. Her engaging explanation of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity showcased not only her mastery of physics but also her extraordinary ability to make science understandable and exciting for everyone. The victory earned her a US$250,000 college scholarship, a US$100,000 science laboratory for her school, and a US$50,000 award for her science teacher.

Beyond the Awards

Hillary’s passion extends far beyond research. Through lectures, educational videos, public talks, writing, and outreach activities, she continues to inspire thousands of young Filipinos to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Her mission is simple yet profound: to make science accessible, engaging, and impactful for everyone.

As she explores the mysteries of galaxies and the origins of the universe, Hillary also continues to champion science communication—bridging the gap between scientific discovery and everyday life
