August 5, 2025 — Powerplant Mall Cinema, Makati City – Acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama, known for her powerful human-centered documentaries, held a special block screening of her latest film, Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea, at the Powerplant Mall cinema. The event drew a diverse audience of supporters, environmental advocates, members of the media—including The New Channel (TNC)—and those passionate about the plight of Filipino fishermen.
This special screening was not just a showcase of the film—it was also a moment of engagement and reflection, as it featured a live talkback session with Director Baby Ruth Villarama, fisherman-activist Osman Pumicpic, and Arnel “Kaka” Satam, who is also featured in the film. The panel addressed the harsh realities faced by Filipino fisherfolk and emphasized the urgent need to defend Philippine sovereignty and maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea.
Food Delivery dives into the often-overlooked realities of where our food comes from. At its core are the stories of Filipino fishermen risking their lives daily—facing foreign harassment, dwindling resources, and systemic neglect—just to bring food to our tables. The film paints a gripping picture of what it means to protect one’s livelihood and national identity in increasingly hostile and uncertain waters.
The documentary offers not only emotional depth but also a political and ecological lens into the struggles of the fishing communities. Issues like illegal fishing, foreign encroachment, climate change, and the lack of support for local fishermen are told through firsthand accounts that resonate deeply with the Filipino audience.
The New Channel (TNC), committed to uplifting stories that inspire social consciousness and change, attended the screening in support of the film’s advocacy. TNC representatives stood in solidarity with the film’s mission to give voice to the marginalized and empower Filipinos through truthful storytelling. The New Channel believe in the power of the media to tell stories that matter. The talkback session following the screening gave audiences the rare opportunity to hear directly from those on the frontlines. Osman Pumicpic, a key figure in the documentary, shared emotional and hard-hitting accounts of his experiences at sea, while Arnel Satam offered insight into ongoing efforts to protect the rights and livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk through policy and diplomacy.
As the audience listened, one thing became clear: every meal we enjoy is tied to stories of struggle, sacrifice, and resilience. Villarama’s film is a call not just to awareness—but to action.
Food Delivery is not merely a documentary—it is a movement for justice, sustainability, and national dignity. Through bold storytelling and real-life testimonies, the film urges viewers to recognize and support the everyday heroes who bring food to our shores—and to protect the waters they call home.
