UPLB MASS @ 51: A Glimmer of Nostalgia and Celebration
The UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society (UPLB MASS) has recently concluded its celebration of its 51st Anniversary. With the theme “Glitz and Glam: A MASSive Legacy in Retrospect”, the celebration lasted one week, from April 7-11, 2025. The UPLB MASS celebrated its 51st Anniversary Week in order to reminisce on the organization’s long and eventful history and to foster a deeper appreciation of the legacy it left throughout the 51 years of its existence. Throughout the 51st Anniversary Week, the UPLB MASS carried out a series of activities that sought to increase the camaraderie between the society’s resident members and alumni, and engage with the UPLB community.
The organization officially began the 51st Anniversary Week on 7 April 2025 with an Opening Ceremony held at the Mathematics Building Lobby, where one may find the organization’s carefully curated Exhibit, which showcased the organization’s long and eventful journey, giving those who witnessed it an insight into the growth and development of the organization and its contributions to the university and beyond, and the legacy it left throughout the 51 years of its existence. The event was attended by various guests, resident members, advisers, and alumni of UPLB MASS.
The organization also prepared “Bites and Blings”, a fair with several food booths selling appetizing delicacies alongside a booth with DIY bag charms and stickers that stood throughout the entirety of the 51st Anniversary Week providing UPLB students and faculty with snacks, meals, and cute charms.
Among the events was the George Hunt, a scavenger hunt game that seeks to create an engaging experience where students can search for hidden cards featuring the society’s titular mascot, George. Spanning the New Math Building and Physical Sciences building and taking place on April 8, 10, and 11, The event featured various cards of differing rarities, and numerous tantalizing prizes to accompany them.
Another event that took place during the week is the Student-Teacher (ST) Quiz; themed “Elbi, UPDATED KPB?: Recent Memes and Trends in Philippine Social Media”. The ST Quiz to foster a closer bond between students and faculty and allow the participants to reminisce on the trends in Philippine Social Media throughout the years. This event took place on April 8, 2025, with 27 competing teams that consisted of both faculty and students. The ST Quiz was an entertaining and engaging competition that put each team’s knowledge on Filipino memes and trends to the test. Team ‘ShetSharon’ claimed victory at this year’s ST Quiz. The ST Quiz also featured various creative and impressive costumes from the participants and members that replicated various Filipino memes and trends. Trisha Jamie Baldonado, a resident member, and Rovic S. Castro from team EKOKTES were awarded for their incredible costumes that stood out from the rest.
To strengthen the camaraderie and bond of the resident members and alumni of UPLB MASS, the organization also conducted the IntraMASS on April 9 at Freedom Park. The IntraMASS was an internal event where members of the society were organized in four teams and competed in various nostalgic games like Charades, Chinese Garter, Tumbang Preso, Patintero, and a Water Balloon Fight.
The organization also conducted MASSter tutorials, where the members of UPLB MASS shared their knowledge by mentoring their fellow students. Students of MATH 28 were able to gain valuable knowledge and insights through the expert tutoring of Samuel Bautista. Students of STAT 101 navigated various statistical tests with the insightful guidance of Erika Leanne Tined and Angelica Mae Licup. Finally, students of CMSC 57 were taught various insights and techniques regarding Combinatorics and Discrete Probability through a brilliant lecture by Terrence de Real.
Finally, to close the Anniversary Week, in order to give back to the UPLB community, UPLB MASS welcomed everyone to its Open Tambayan and Closing Ceremony on the afternoon of April 11. UPLB MASS treated more than 150 people with free food and drink while the organization’s baby batch ‘Summatrix’ enthralled many with an entertaining karaoke themed performance.
As the Anniversary Week came to a close, all those who came to celebrate this momentous occasion with UPLB MASS witnessed and appreciated the organization’s 51-year long history and legacy. The organization looked back to the Y2K era, not just to appreciate the times left behind and the wonders and nostalgic elements of that era, but also to find inspiration that can drive the current and future members of the organization to adapt and move forward into the new era its members face today. UPLB MASS thanks those in the UPLB community who celebrated its anniversary alongside them and those who participated in the organization’s various events throughout its 51st Anniversary Week. The organization strives to continue the ongoing legacy of UPLB MASS for more years to come.
