Building Safer Digital Futures: Philippines Innovation Stakeholders Champion Safety-by-Design in Technology

Verbena A & B Hall, Marco Polo Ortigas, Pasig City — 5 September, 2025

Leaders and innovators from across the technology, government, and civil society sectors gathered for the Culmination Press Conference and Media Lunch of the Safety-by-Design (SD) Training under the National Models for Women’s Safety Online (NMWSO) Program, supported by the Philippine ICT Innovation Network (PIIN).

Held at Marco Polo Ortigas, the event capped off three days of intensive learning and collaboration focused on one shared mission: embedding Safety by Design principles into digital platforms to build safer, more inclusive online environments — particularly for women and marginalized groups.

A Milestone in Digital Safety and Inclusion

In an era where technology has become the backbone of communication, business, and daily life, the Safety-by-Design Training represents a critical step forward for the Philippines’ digital ecosystem. The initiative gathered stakeholders to identify, discuss, and implement ways to prevent digital harms before they happen — ensuring that innovation is anchored on responsibility, ethics, and human rights.

In a joint statement, the organizers affirmed:

“Today marks an important milestone in the Philippines’ digital journey. Through the Safety-by-Design Training, stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector have come together to chart a safer online future, particularly for women and marginalized groups who bear the brunt of digital harms. This effort is part of the National Models for Women’s Safety Online (NMWSO) Program, ensuring that online platforms are not only innovative but also protective of the people who use them. Together, we call on technology companies to embrace Safety by Design as a standard, not an afterthought, in building digital platforms.”

Voices of Innovation and Responsibility

The press conference brought together thought leaders and advocates driving the conversation around safer technology design:

Moderating the discussions was Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, a respected ICT policy advocate and champion for women’s empowerment in digital governance. She guided the panel in exploring the intersections between innovation, law, and human rights — reinforcing that digital safety is a shared responsibility across sectors.

Advancing a Culture of “Safety by Design”

The culmination event served not just as a closing ceremony, but as a call to action. Stakeholders committed to fostering a national movement where Safety by Design becomes a foundational standard in Philippine digital development — one that ensures every technological innovation safeguards dignity, equality, and trust.

As the Philippines continues to navigate its digital transformation, the message from today’s gathering was clear: the future of innovation must be safe, inclusive, and human-centered by design.

Key Takeaway:
The Safety-by-Design Training and its culminating press conference reaffirmed a vital truth — that innovation without safety is incomplete. By uniting policymakers, advocates, and innovators, the Philippines is setting a precedent for digital progress that protects and empowers every user, especially the most vulnerable.
