Building Safety from the Ground Up: NMWSO Philippines Safety-by-Design Showcase

On 29 January 2026, The New Channel (TNC) had the privilege of attending and covering the NMWSO Philippines Grand Challenge – Safety-by-Design (SbD) Showcase at the Marco Polo Ortigas. What unfolded was more than a technology showcase—it was a collective call to action to create safer digital environments for women and marginalized communities.

The event brought together innovators, policymakers, advocates, technologists, and community leaders united by a shared belief: technology must be built with safety at its core, not added as an afterthought.

The showcase marked the culmination of the National Models for Women’s Safety Online (NMWSO) Philippines Grand Challenge, an initiative that challenged teams across the country to rethink how digital tools are designed, deployed, and governed. At the center of the challenge was the Safety-by-Design framework—an approach that embeds protection, privacy, and dignity into technology from the very beginning.

Technology That Protects, Not Just Performs

Throughout the day, it was observed how Safety-by-Design can transform innovation into a force for protection and empowerment. The solutions presented addressed real risks faced by women—across mobility, health, livelihoods, governance, and online spaces—by proactively preventing harm rather than responding only after it occurs.

The question driving the challenge was refreshingly direct: How can technology better protect people?

Purpose-Driven Innovation on Display

Among the standout solutions was Alerto, a female-led and DOST-supported initiative that integrates AI, sensors, and community reporting to enable real-time emergency response. Designed for prevention and rapid action, Alerto connects individuals, communities, and first responders—demonstrating how life-saving technology can be built with urgency and care.

LIWA, developed by students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Manila, presented a grassroots, community-centered platform rooted in local realities. By prioritizing participation and lived experience, LIWA showcased the power of youth-led innovation in fostering trust, inclusion, and collective safety.

Meanwhile, LUNA / SAFE introduced a discreet, dual-use application designed with survivors in mind. Featuring secure documentation and SOS tools, the platform places confidentiality, privacy, and user control at the forefront—empowering users while respecting their need for safety and autonomy.

Together, these solutions proved that Safety-by-Design is not theoretical—it works in real-world contexts.

Conversations That Matter

Beyond the innovations themselves, the SbD Showcase opened space for meaningful dialogue on ethical technology, responsible innovation, and institutional accountability. Judges, partners, and participants engaged in discussions emphasizing that women’s safety online requires intentional design, cross-sector collaboration, and policies rooted in human rights.

As TNC witnessed firsthand, progress happens when technology builders, communities, and decision-makers work together toward shared responsibility.

What Comes Next

The NMWSO Philippines Safety-by-Design Showcase underscored a vital truth: technology carries responsibility. When guided by empathy, inclusivity, and purpose, innovation can do more than function—it can protect, empower, and uplift.

As NMWSO Philippines continues to advance women’s safety online, the stories and solutions featured at the showcase offer a clear direction forward: “build technology that puts people first—and safety at the center.”
